Taste Atlas, a global culinary guide website, released a list of the 7 best coffees in Southeast Asia in September 2023.
This list includes several Indonesian coffees, one of which is Kopi Luwak, which achieved a score of 4.3 out of 5. This score placed Kopi Luwak as the second-best coffee in Southeast Asia according to Taste Atlas.
This coffee has its own unique characteristic: it is made from coffee beans that have been digested and excreted by civets. Afterward, the coffee beans are washed, ground, roasted, and then ready for consumption.
"It is believed that when coffee beans pass through the digestive tract of this animal (civet), they lose their acidity, making the coffee smoother, more refined, and less bitter," wrote Taste Atlas in its report.
Besides Kopi Luwak, the Indonesian Kopi Tubruk also ranked 4th as the best coffee in Southeast Asia with a score of 4.2 points.
"The preparation process is simple: mix boiling or hot water with finely or medium-ground coffee powder," explained Taste Atlas.
Before consumption, Kopi Tubruk can be left to stand for a while until the coffee grounds settle at the bottom of the cup.
Meanwhile, the first-ranked best coffee in Southeast Asia according to Taste Atlas is Vietnamese Iced Coffee, which achieved a score of 4.5 points.
Taste Atlas explains that this coffee is traditionally made using medium or coarsely ground Vietnamese coffee. It is then brewed using a drip phin filter and served with strong coffee, sweetened condensed milk, and ice.
