Imported Clothing is Increasingly Rampant: Where Do Indonesia's Textile Imports Come From?

The import business of clothing is increasingly rampant in Indonesia. This situation makes local textile and textile product entrepreneurs struggle to compete.

Indonesia frequently imports various textiles and textile products from various countries. So, from which countries does Indonesia import these textiles?

According to a report from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia imported 2.20 million tons of textiles and textile products throughout 2021. This amount increased by 21.1% compared to the previous year, which was 1.82 million tons.

The largest amount of imported clothing in Indonesia originates from China. A total of 990,200 tons of textiles and textile products were imported from that country, representing 44.86% of the total imports last year.

Brazil ranks second with a total import of 174,800 tons of textiles and textile products to Indonesia. The United States (US) occupies third place, importing 137,900 tons of textiles and textile products into the country.

Indonesia also imports textiles and textile products from South Korea and Australia, amounting to 122,100 tons and 115,900 tons respectively. Thailand and Vietnam each have a total import of 97,100 tons and 96,100 tons of textiles and textile products to Indonesia.

Next, Taiwan and Hong Kong sent textiles and textile products from their countries to Indonesia, amounting to 60,600 tons and 47,000 tons respectively. Meanwhile, Japan sent 43,900 tons of textiles and textile products to Indonesia.

In total, the value of textile and textile product imports to Indonesia reached US$942.62 million throughout last year. This amount increased compared to the previous year, which was US$720.05 million.
