The rise of e-commerce has made it easier for consumers to purchase desired goods, including electronics such as mobile phones. However, e-commerce is not always the primary choice, as many Indonesian consumers prefer to buy mobile phones directly from physical stores.
This aligns with findings from a Kurious survey by the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), which shows that many Indonesian consumers still buy mobile phones from official physical stores rather than e-commerce platforms. This percentage reaches 59.3%.
“Generally, respondents bought mobile phones from official physical stores,” according to the Kurious survey results released Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
In addition to official physical stores, 25.7% of respondents reported buying mobile phones from official e-commerce stores.
Furthermore, 22.1% of respondents bought mobile phones from non-official physical stores.
On the other hand, only a small percentage of respondents bought mobile phones from non-official e-commerce stores (8.3%), official store websites (8.2%), and other places (7.4%).
The survey also showed that the three main factors considered when buying a mobile phone are affordable price (65.8%), phone performance (51.1%), and camera quality (40.9%).
Kurious-KIC surveyed 885 respondents across various regions of Indonesia, with 49.2% male respondents and 50.8% female respondents.
More than half of the respondents were from Java Island excluding Jakarta (61.4%), followed by Jakarta (14.6%), and Sumatra (12.4%). Respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua ranged from 0.7% to 3.3%.
Most respondents were aged between 35-44 years (31.4%), followed by the 25-34 age group (29.2%) and the 45-54 age group (23.2%).
The survey was conducted from February 28 to March 9, 2023, using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method, with a margin of error of approximately 3.29% and a 95% confidence level.
