South Sumatra Has the Largest Rubber Plantation Area in Indonesia in 2023

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia had 3.55 million hectares (ha) of rubber plantations in 2023. This represents a decrease of approximately 6%, or 230,000 ha, year-on-year (yoy).

In 2023, South Sumatra had the largest rubber plantation area, reaching 883,300 ha, accounting for 25% of the national total. This was followed by Jambi with 408,500 ha (11.5%) and North Sumatra with 373,100 ha (10.5%).

The following are the top 10 provinces with the largest rubber plantations in Indonesia in 2023:

5. Central Kalimantan: 312,800 ha
6. Riau: 240,400 ha

9. West Sumatra: 130,700 ha
10. Bengkulu: 101,800 ha

BPS also noted that 13 provinces had no rubber plantations last year: DKI Jakarta, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, West Sulawesi, North Maluku, West Papua, Southwest Papua, South Papua, Central Papua, and Highland Papua.

According to LindungiHutan, rubber trees thrive in areas with an average daily temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, average annual rainfall of 2,500-4,000 millimeters, and 150 rainy days per year. Therefore, suitable areas for rubber cultivation are in western and central Indonesia, such as Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan, due to their generally wetter climates.
