Shallots are a highly strategic horticultural commodity in Indonesia. Almost every household in the country consumes shallots every day.
Indonesian shallot production is not only sold domestically, but also exported. According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the value of shallot exports decreased in 2021.
BPS recorded that Indonesia exported shallots worth US$7.1 million with a volume of 4,000 tons in 2021. The value of shallot exports fell by 41.58% from the previous year, which was valued at US$13.7 million tons.
Based on the destination country, Indonesia exported the most shallots to Thailand, reaching US$4.66 million with a volume of 3,130 tons. This was followed by Singapore and Malaysia at US$1.74 million and US$111,230 respectively.
Looking at the trend, the value of shallot exports has been fluctuating over the past five years. The highest value of shallot exports occurred in 2020, while the lowest occurred in 2018, at US$6.9 million tons.
