Based on data from the Plantation Crop Seed Information System of the Directorate General of Plantation of the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia had 6.77 million oil palm seeds as of April 26, 2022.
The Directorate General of Plantation estimates that the number of oil palm seeds to be distributed will reach 1.84 million seeds.
The details are as follows: 920,620 seeds will be distributed through the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN), with most of the seeds being used for the People's Palm Oil Rejuvenation (PSR) program. Then, 812,660 seeds for the private sector, and 105,750 seeds for individuals.
However, the Directorate General of Plantation has not yet published information regarding the planned distribution period.
Until April 26, 2022, the Directorate General of Plantation recorded 1,800 oil palm seed producers in Indonesia, with a total seed availability of 116.34 million seeds, and a production potential of 241.81 million seeds.
Proper seed preparation is crucial for future oil palm production. Indonesian oil palm plantations require replanting with superior varieties to replace old palm trees whose productivity is declining.
However, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir mentioned the existence of a "seed mafia" that needs to be watched out for because it distributes poor-quality seeds, which will then harm farmers.
“There is even a mafia in seeds. Many farmers receive hybrid seeds, the wrong ones, so when they grow, they don't do well,” said Erick, as reported by Katadata.co.id, Monday (April 25, 2022).
Erick hopes that this mafia practice will not be allowed to grow, so that the quality of seeds received by farmers does not decrease.
