According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the global average surface air temperature in September 2023 reached 16.38 degrees Celsius (°C).

This temperature is 0.93 °C higher than the average September temperature for the period 1991-2020, setting a new record for the highest positive temperature anomaly.

C3S also found that the global average temperature for January-September 2023 showed an anomaly of 0.52 °C higher than the average temperature for the period 1991-2020.

Concurrent with this phenomenon, significant melting of ice in the Antarctic has been observed.

C3S obtained these figures from computer analysis of billions of data points. The temperature data used comes from measurements taken by satellites, ships, aircraft, and weather monitoring stations spread across the globe.
