Durians Become a Leading Fruit Commodity with the Highest Export Volume

Pineapples are Indonesia's leading fruit commodity, boasting the highest export volume. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded pineapple exports reaching 236,226 tons in 2019, a 7,693-ton increase from 2018. In comparison, banana exports totaled 22,745 tons, mangoes 2,470 tons, oranges 2,079 tons, and durians 360 tons.

Worldatlas.com reports that Indonesia is the world's 9th largest pineapple producer, with a production of 1.39 million tons per year in 2018. For other fruits, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports Indonesia as the world's 8th largest orange producer and the 3rd largest banana producer. Indonesia's main fruit export destinations include China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Despite this, Indonesia faces challenges in fruit development due to limited production land and a lack of advanced cultivation technology. The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) considers these challenges even greater given the current global food crisis threat. This is further compounded by the threat of climate change and extreme droughts affecting 30% of Indonesia.

To develop the local fruit industry, the government launched the Orange Revolution program in May 2013. This program aims to achieve self-sufficiency in domestic fruit consumption. Furthermore, it seeks to establish Indonesia as the largest producer and exporter of tropical fruits in Southeast Asia by 2025 and globally by 2045.
