The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's rice imports reached 1.79 million tons, valued at US$980 million, during the January-September 2023 period.

Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, explained that these imports included various rice types: special, premium, medium, consumption, and broken rice.

Amalia detailed that three countries were the main sources of rice imports to Indonesia. First is Thailand, accounting for 74.06% of total imports to Indonesia, valued at US$466.5 million.

This was followed by Vietnam, supplying 24.35% of imports, worth US$456.4 million. Lastly, India's rice import proportion was only 0.39%, or US$31.9 million.

"Since India implemented import restrictions or bans in July this year, the proportion of rice imports from India has continued to decline and has become very small in recent months," Amalia stated in a virtual press conference on Monday, October 16, 2023.

Besides India, BPS explained that two other countries known to have imposed rice export bans are Bangladesh and Russia.

These bans arose due to the prolonged dry season caused by El Niño. As a result, several countries withheld their food export stocks, diverting them for domestic needs.

However, the rice export bans from Russia and Bangladesh did not significantly impact Indonesia. This is because neither country is a major rice supplier to Indonesia.

"The export ban policies from those two countries did not directly affect Indonesia's rice performance or proportion," she added.
