East Java, Province with the Largest Population of Slaughter Cattle

The government plans to import 15,000 breeding cows from abroad with a budget allocation of Rp 450 billion. This step aims to boost the domestic cattle population to meet domestic beef demand and suppress beef prices. As is known, the price of local beef is quite expensive, remaining above Rp 100,000/kg.

According to the 2017 Livestock and Animal Health Statistics, the provisional figure for the slaughter cattle population reached 16.6 million head. Of this number, 4.5 million head, or 27.4%, are in East Java, making this easternmost province of Java the region with the largest slaughter cattle population compared to other regions.

Central Java has the second-largest slaughter cattle population at 10.35% of the total population, followed by South Sulawesi at 8.64%. The top ten provinces with the largest slaughter cattle populations account for 77.4% or approximately 12.84 million of the national total.
