According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), as of mid-July 2023, approximately 63% of Indonesia has entered the dry season.
BMKG also predicts that this year's dry season will be drier and longer than usual, influenced by the emergence of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
"In Indonesia, El Niño results in drier conditions, leading to reduced rainfall, decreased cloud cover, and increased temperatures," said A. Fachri Rajab, Head of the BMKG Climate Change Information Center, in a press release on Monday (31/7/2023).
"BMKG predicts that the peak impact of El Niño will occur in August-September 2023," said Fachri.
According to BMKG, the drought caused by El Niño can trigger crop failures, especially for seasonal food crops that require a lot of water, such as rice.
Meanwhile, ahead of the peak of El Niño this year, rice prices in Indonesia have been creeping up.
Based on data from the Ministry of Trade, in July 2023 the average national price of premium quality rice reached Rp14,039 per kilogram (kg).
This price increased by 0.1% compared to the previous month (month-on-month/mom), increased by 13.2% compared to a year ago (year-on-year/yoy), and became the most expensive record in the last five years.
A similar situation occurred with medium-quality rice, which had an average national price of Rp12,079 per kg in July 2023.
The average price of medium rice increased by 0.4% monthly (mom), increased by 16.1% annually (yoy), and reached its highest level since 2018.
