Public preference for spicy food is on the rise again. This can be seen from the increasing consumption trend of large chilies and chili peppers, the main ingredients of spicy seasonings, which has surged, even surpassing pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Indonesia's consumption of large chilies reached 636,560 tons in 2022. This figure increased from 596,140 tons in 2021 and 549,480 tons in 2020.

Consumption even exceeded pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels, specifically in 2019, at 629,020 tons.

BPS explains that the production of large chilies in 2022 reached 1.48 million tons. This figure also increased by 8.47% or 115,250 tons from 2021.

"Household consumption of large chilies in 2022 reached 636,560 tons, an increase of 6.78% or 40,420 tons from 2021. Household participation in large chili consumption was 71.33%," wrote BPS in its report.

In contrast, consumption of chili peppers reached 569,650 tons in 2022. This achievement also increased by 7.86% or 41,510 tons from 2021 consumption of 528,140 tons.

2022 consumption also surpassed the 2020 achievement of 479,030 tons.

Compared to 2019, consumption was 531,170 tons. Therefore, the 2022 chili pepper consumption record is the highest since the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Household participation in chili pepper consumption is 75.77%," said BPS.
