Coconut: The Largest Plantation Commodity in North Sulawesi in 2020

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) notes that North Sulawesi is a major producer of coconuts. In 2020, the province supplied 242,500 tons of coconuts, a 7.9% decrease compared to 2019.

Despite the decrease, coconut production in the province remains the largest compared to other plantation commodities. The area of coconut plantations in North Sulawesi is also the largest among other commodities, reaching 260,800 hectares in 2020.

However, unlike its declining production, the area of coconut plantations in Maluku increased by 0.09% compared to 2019, reaching 260,500 hectares. By region, the highest coconut production was in North Minahasa Regency, at 37,100 tons. The lowest coconut production was in Tomohon City, at only 367 tons.

Besides coconuts, North Sulawesi also produced 11,360 tons of nutmeg last year. Clove and cocoa production in North Sulawesi was recorded at 10,260 tons and 5,900 tons, respectively.

Furthermore, coffee production in North Sulawesi was recorded at 3,700 tons. Following that, sago production reached 2,700 tons, and aren (sugar palm) production reached 1,100 tons.
