Central Java is the largest shallot producing center in Indonesia. This province, led by Governor Ganjar Pranowo, contributed more than a quarter of Indonesia's national shallot production in 2021.
According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), throughout 2021 Central Java produced 564,260 tons of shallots, equivalent to 28.15% of the total national shallot production, which reached 2.0 million tons.
The next largest shallot producer was East Java, with 500,990 tons (24.99%) last year. This was followed by West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) with 222,620 tons, West Sumatra with 200,370 tons, and South Sulawesi with 183,210 tons.
Next, West Java produced 170,650 tons of shallots, North Sumatra 53,960 tons, Yogyakarta Special Region 29,810 tons, Bali 23,220 tons, and Jambi 13,260 tons (0.66%).
Production from these 10 main shallot-producing provinces reached 1.96 million tons, or 97.89% of total national shallot production in 2021.
Overall, national shallot production in 2021 grew by 10.4% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, shallot consumption in the housing sector in 2021 reached 790,630 tons, an increase of 8.33% from the previous year.
