Riau, Indonesia's Largest Coconut-Producing Province

Riau was Indonesia's largest coconut producer in 2020. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded coconut production in the province at 387,900 tons that year. North Sulawesi followed with 262,900 tons, East Java with 250,700 tons, North Maluku with 207,800 tons, and Central Sulawesi with 191,800 tons.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the estimated area of coconut plantations in Riau in 2020 was 418,270 hectares. The largest coconut-producing area in Riau is located in Indragiri Hilir Regency, bordering Jambi province. This regency is the only one in Indonesia to implement hybrid coconut farming under the People's Estate Core Plantation (PIR) system as an effort to increase production, income, and public welfare.

Coconut commodities contribute significantly to the country's foreign exchange earnings from plantation exports. It ranks fourth after palm oil, rubber, and cocoa. According to BPS data, Indonesia's coconut exports reached 1.53 million tons, valued at US$819.26 million, up to the third quarter of 2020. Export destinations include the United States, the Netherlands, South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
