Indonesian rice consumption per capita per week decreased in 2021.

Indonesia is known as one of the world's largest consumers of white rice. However, the proportion of white rice consumption by the Indonesian population decreased in 2021.

The trend shows an increase in per capita weekly white rice consumption in Indonesia from 2018 to 2020. It was recorded at 0.286 kg per week in 2018, increasing to 0.331 kg per week in 2019, and further to 0.342 kg per week in 2020. After that, in 2021, Indonesian white rice consumption decreased to 0.309 kg per week.

This decrease in weekly white rice consumption coincides with the country's rice production. Rice production in 2021 for food consumption reached 31.36 million tons, a decrease of 140,730 tons or 0.45 percent compared to the 31.50 million tons produced in 2020.

The highest rice production in 2021 occurred in March, at 5.57 million tons. Meanwhile, the lowest production occurred in December, at 1.17 million tons. Unlike 2021, the highest rice production in 2020 occurred in April.

For information, rice prices in Indonesia crept up in the third quarter of 2022. Although the increase was not drastic, a price increase has been recorded since August 2022, continuing into September 2022 after the government raised subsidized fuel prices.

The average price of premium quality rice in Indonesia in September 2022 increased by 0.8% month-on-month (mom) and by 2.4% year-on-year (yoy).

Meanwhile, the average price of medium-quality rice in September 2022 increased by 0.9% month-on-month (mom) and by 2.9% year-on-year (yoy).
