According to a YouGov survey report, green tea—including matcha—will be the top favorite among tea drinkers in Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia by 2025.

Specifically in Thailand and Singapore, green tea is the primary choice for adults, with percentages of 68% and 67% respectively.

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, it is the second choice with a percentage of 43%, trailing black tea which was chosen by 64% of respondents.

YouGov stated that despite its widespread presence, familiarity with matcha-based products varies among tea drinkers.

“Approximately half of the population in Indonesia (53%), Thailand (48%), and Singapore (45%) stated that they are familiar with matcha-based beverages, desserts, or smoothies,” it explained.

Among respondents who consume green tea powder, matcha is enjoyed in many forms. According to YouGov, in Thailand, traditional brewed tea garnered the highest popularity or recognition level compared to the other two countries, reaching 49%.

While in Indonesia and Singapore, it was 36% respectively.

Regarding the consumption of matcha in food, such as desserts and energy bars, Indonesia and Singapore lead with 38% and 39% respectively, while Thailand stands at 26%.

Nevertheless, YouGov clarified, despite matcha becoming a part of daily consumption, awareness of stock scarcity remains low.

“More than half of tea drinkers in Indonesia (59%) and Singapore (58%), and nearly half in Thailand (45%), are unaware of the ongoing matcha shortage,” it explained.

YouGov conducted this survey from May 8-12, 2025, involving 1,656 Indonesian citizens, 931 Singaporean citizens, and 1,511 Thai citizens.
