Dairy Cattle Companies in Indonesia Decreased from 2000-2024

The number of dairy cattle companies in Indonesia has significantly decreased over the past two decades.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2000 there were 405 dairy cattle companies in Indonesia. This number then increased to 517 companies in 2007.

However, in 2008 the number dropped drastically to 99 companies. This downward trend continued until only 44 companies remained in 2024.

Starting in May 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) opened the door for imports of live dairy cattle from Brazil and the United States, in an effort to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production by 2029.

However, according to the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Agung Suganda, the realization of dairy cattle investment is slow due to a lack of available land with low rental costs.

This problem has caused dairy cattle investors, including TH Group from Vietnam, to delay their import plans.

"We are still negotiating land issues with TH Group because their investment plan is quite large. This land issue remains our biggest challenge," said Agung, as reported by Katadata.co.id (July 14, 2025).
