Fishermen's Welfare Declines in 2024, Other Sectors Rise

The welfare of Indonesian fisheries farmers in 2024 decreased compared to the previous year, as indicated by the Farmer Exchange Rate (NTP).

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the NTP for the fisheries sector was at 101.88 in 2024, down 3.18% compared to 2023 (year-on-year/yoy).

Specifically, in 2024, the NTP for the capture fisheries sub-sector decreased by 3.47% (yoy) to 101.76, while the NTP for the aquaculture sub-sector decreased by 2.7% (yoy) to 102.07.

Meanwhile, the NTP for other agricultural sectors increased, as shown in the graph.

The NTP for people's plantation crops experienced the highest increase, with a 16.05% increase (yoy) to 149.1 in 2024.

This was followed by the NTP for horticultural crops, which increased by 5.33% (yoy) to 117.71; the NTP for food crops, which increased by 2.6% (yoy) to 110.45; and the NTP for livestock, which increased by 0.66% (yoy) to 102.48.

Overall, the welfare of Indonesian farmers improved throughout last year. This is reflected in the combined NTP, which increased by 6.36% (yoy) to 119.62 in 2024.

The NTP is one of the indicators used to measure the purchasing power or welfare level of farmers.

BPS calculates the NTP by comparing the exchange value of agricultural products (the price index received by farmers) with the production costs and goods/services they consume (the price index paid by farmers).

An NTP score above 100 indicates that farmers are experiencing a surplus/profit, where the selling price of their products is greater than their production and consumption expenses. An NTP of 100 means farmers are breaking even, and an NTP below 100 reflects a deficit/loss condition.
