Throughout 2023, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) received 128 reports from the police and expert testimonies regarding illegal mining (PETI) or unlicensed mining activities in Indonesia.

The highest number of illegal mining cases in 2023 originated from South Sumatra and Riau.

Similar reports were also received from North Sumatra, Aceh, East Java, and several other provinces, as shown in the graph.

Director General of Minerals and Coal Tri Winarno explained that illegal mining activities or PETI violate Law Number 3 of 2020 concerning Minerals and Coal.

Based on this law, mining activities can be categorized as illegal if the managing company does not possess the necessary permits during exploration, production operations, or processing.

"These activities are subject to the same sanctions: a maximum of 5 years imprisonment and a maximum fine of Rp100 billion," said Tri Winarno in a working meeting with Commission XII of the DPR (House of Representatives) on Tuesday (12/11/2024).

The ESDM Ministry is striving to prevent illegal mining through digitalization, formalization, and law enforcement.

"We restrict the movement of unlicensed miners through digitalization, namely Simbara (Coal Information System)," said Tri.
