Based on the results of the area sample frame (ASF) survey by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), national rice production for food consumption is projected to reach 30.24 million tons by the end of 2024.

The volume decreased by 0.76 million tons or 2.43% year-on-year (yoy).

Acting Head of BPS, Amalia A. Adininggar, explained that this production decrease is in line with a 1.64% (yoy) reduction in harvested area to 10.05 million hectares (ha) this year.

"The decrease is due to the decline in the harvested area from January to April (yoy) because of the El Niño phenomenon in the second half of 2023, which caused planting delays," said Amalia in an online press conference on Tuesday (15/10/2024).

However, rice production in subround II or May-August 2024 increased by 0.16 million tons or 1.47% (yoy).

Then, in subround III or September-December 2024, production volume is projected to increase by 1 million tons or 13.39% (yoy).

Spatially, Java Island is the region with the highest rice production in Indonesia, reaching 16.54 million tons or 54.21% of total national production in 2024.

It is followed by Sumatra Island with 6.67 million tons (21.97%), Sulawesi with 3.98 million tons (13.10%), Bali and Nusa Tenggara with 1.61 million tons (5.30%), Kalimantan with 1.43 million tons (4.72%), and Maluku and Papua with 0.21 million tons (0.70%).
