The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the harvested area of rice is estimated to reach 10.61 million hectares (ha) in 2022. This figure represents a 1.87% increase compared to the previous year's 10.41 ha, as shown in the graph.
Details show that the harvested area of rice from January to September 2022 was 8.69 million ha, down 0.08 million ha (0.86%) from the same period the previous year. The harvested area of rice from October to December 2022 was 1.91 million ha, an increase of 0.27 million ha (16.45%) compared to the same period the previous year.
From the 10.61 million ha harvested area, an estimated 55.67 million tons of dry milled rice (GKG) is expected to be produced this year. This represents an increase of 1.25 million tons of GKG (2.31%) compared to last year's 54.42 million tons.
This rice production of 55.67 million tons of GKG, when converted into rice for human consumption, amounts to 32.07 million tons in 2022. This figure shows an increase of 718,030 tons (2.29%) from last year's rice production of 31.36 million tons.
For information, since 2018, BPS has collaborated with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN), which have now merged into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency, and the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), to improve the harvested area estimation using the Area Sample Frame (KSA) method.
The national basic paddy field area used to estimate the harvested area, as stipulated in the Decree of the Minister of ATR/Head of BPN No. 686/SK-PG.03.03/XII/2019 dated December 17, 2019, is 7,463,948 ha.
The calculation process for rice production uses a method that integrates two data collection systems: the harvested area (in hectares) using the KSA method, and the measurement of productivity (tons/ha) using a plot sampling method based on the KSA sub-segment.
Using this method, rice production (in tons) in the form of paddy (GKG) is obtained and then converted into rice for human consumption.
