Top 10 Rice-Producing Countries in the World: Where Does Indonesia Rank?

The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) has released a list of the world's largest rice-producing countries. The results show that China was the world's largest rice producer from 2014-2018, with an average production of 210.91 million tons, contributing 27.81%.

India followed in second place with an average production of 163.7 million tons or 21.59%. Meanwhile, Indonesia's rice production was the third largest, averaging 77.96 million tons, contributing 10.28% to total global rice production.

Next was Bangladesh with an average production of 52.92 million tons (6.98%). Vietnam followed with an average rice production of 43.99 million tons (5.8%). This was followed by Thailand and Myanmar with average rice productions of 30.1 million tons (3.97%) and 25.86 million tons (3.41%) respectively.

The next largest rice-producing countries were the Philippines with an average production of 18.6 million tons (2.45%), Brazil with 11.86 million tons (1.56%), and Pakistan with 10.59 million tons (1.4%).

Of the top 10 largest rice-producing countries in the world, the majority are located in Asia. Five of them are Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, and the Philippines. Brazil is the only major rice-producing country outside of Asia.
