East Java was the province with the highest number of cattle slaughtered throughout 2022. This is according to a report released by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) titled *2022 Livestock Slaughter Statistics*.
The data shows that the number of cattle slaughtered in East Java reached 225,665 head. The second highest was West Java, with 119,999 head, followed by Central Java with 110,962 head.
These three provinces had the highest numbers in Indonesia. Significantly lower in fourth place was Banten, with 43,014 cattle slaughtered, followed by West Nusa Tenggara with 40,170 head.
The three provinces with the lowest number of cattle slaughtered were Riau Islands (1,698 head), West Sulawesi (1,171 head), and North Kalimantan (1,009 head).
BPS stated that livestock slaughter in a province can identify livestock distribution channels and can be used to map producing provinces for specific types of livestock.

It should be noted that the figures above are the accumulated number of slaughters within the province. BPS mentions that some livestock originated from outside the province.
For example, in North Sumatra, a total of 12,692 cattle were slaughtered. Of that number, 315 head originated from other provinces.
The difference between the total number of cattle slaughtered and those originating from other provinces represents the number of cattle from the province's own farming; for North Sumatra, this is 12,377 head.
"In reality, the number of cattle from local production or farming is certainly more than 12,377 head," wrote BPS in its report.
BPS explained that this assumption can be seen from the slaughter data carried out by other provinces; some livestock originated from North Sumatra, for example, 4,694 head in Aceh, 360 head in West Sumatra, and 812 head in Riau.
