Top 10 Indonesian Provinces with the Highest Soybean Production in 2022: East Java Takes the Lead

Based on a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), domestic soybean production in 2022 reached 241,434 tons, harvested from an area of 148,869 hectares.

East Java was the largest soybean-producing province in Indonesia, with a production volume of 69,650 tons throughout last year.

The top three national soybean producers in 2022 were all located on Java Island. Central Java (62,010 tons) and West Java (36,010 tons) ranked second and third, respectively.

Meanwhile, BPS did not record soybean production from DKI Jakarta and North Kalimantan provinces last year.

The following is a complete list of the top 10 provinces with the largest soybean production volume nationally in 2022:

1. East Java: 69,656.60 tons
2. Central Java: 62,031.70 tons
3. West Java: 36,011.50 tons
4. Southeast Sulawesi: 11,052.90 tons
5. Central Sulawesi: 10,213.70 tons
6. West Nusa Tenggara (NTB): 9,726.40 tons
7. North Sumatra: 8,026.30 tons
8. Yogyakarta Special Region (D.I Yogyakarta): 7,282.10 tons
9. South Kalimantan: 6,114.90 tons
10. Jambi: 4,631.30 tons

BPS stated that soybeans in Indonesia are primarily used as raw materials for the food industry, processed into tempeh, tofu, soy sauce, tauco, and soy milk.

According to calculations using the 2022 interim population projection approach, BPS noted that average soybean consumption, both household and non-household, is still not met by domestic soybean production.

"This indicates a production shortfall of 81.48% of remaining household consumption," wrote BPS in its report.

BPS projections show that only three provinces had production volumes exceeding their domestic consumption: West Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and Gorontalo.
