Indonesia's Shallot Production Reached 1.82 Million Tons in 2020

Shallots are a spice commodity widely consumed by Indonesian households as a daily cooking ingredient. Given the high consumption needs, shallot production in Indonesia has increased every year.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that shallot production in Indonesia reached 1.82 million tons in 2020. This figure increased by 14.88% from the previous year, which was 1.58 million tons.

Shallot production showed a fluctuating trend throughout last year. In January 2020, shallot production was recorded at 152,930 tons.

This amount increased by 9.1% to 166,850 tons in February 2020, and then decreased by 22.95% to 128,550 tons in April 2020. Shallot production increased again by 15.15% in May to 148,030 tons, but decreased again by 14.3% to 126,920 tons the following month.

Shallot production subsequently surged to 198,890 tons in August 2020. However, production decreased again for three consecutive months from September to November 2020.

The figure only increased again in December 2020. Shallot production was recorded at 203,020 tons at the end of last year.

By province, Central Java was the highest shallot producer in Indonesia, at 611,170 tons in 2020. This contributed 33.86% to national shallot production.

East Java followed with shallot production reaching 454,580 tons or 25.04%. After that was West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) with shallot production of 188,740 tons or 10.4%.
