National food security showed improvement throughout 2012-2018. This is reflected in the increase of Indonesia's Global Food Security Index (GFSI), assessed across all aspects, to 54.8 in 2018 compared to 46.8 in 2012. With this score, Indonesia ranked 65th globally and fifth in ASEAN.
The food security index assessment comprises four aspects. First, affordability, related to streamlining the lengthy supply chain. Second, availability, namely, maintaining supply. Third, quality and safety, concerning the quality and safety of nutritional standards and import supervision. Fourth, natural resources and resilience, related to land and food production.
Indonesia's food security score in terms of affordability was 55.2, ranking 63rd out of 113 countries. The availability aspect scored 58.2 (rank 58), the quality and safety aspect scored 44.5 (rank 84), and the natural resources aspect scored 43.9 (rank 111).
