Red Chili Prices Soar Ahead of Christmas and New Year in These 10 Provinces

In the lead-up to Christmas and New Year, the prices of several essential commodities have begun to climb. Extreme weather currently affecting parts of Indonesia is one of the reasons for the increase in the price of red chilies, exceeding Rp 100,000 per kg.

Based on data from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center (PIHPS), the price of red chilies in traditional markets in Maluku reached Rp 150,000 per kilogram (kg) on December 10, 2021. This is the highest price compared to other provinces and significantly above the national average of Rp 76,100 per kg.

The ongoing extreme weather has impacted chili harvests and limited supply from farmers, causing prices to soar above Rp 100,000 in recent weeks. Some chili farmers in Maluku who sell their harvest to other regions have also contributed to the price increase in the area.

The provinces with the next highest red chili prices are North Maluku at Rp 140,000 per kg, followed by West Kalimantan at Rp 112,500 per kg, Central Kalimantan at Rp 103,750 per kg, and West Papua at Rp 102,500 per kg.

Southeast Sulawesi follows with a red chili price of Rp 95,650 per kg. After that are South Kalimantan at Rp 95,350 per kg, North Kalimantan at Rp 91,250 per kg, and Bangka Belitung Islands and Central Sulawesi at Rp 88,150 per kg and Rp 81,250 per kg respectively.
