The Jakarta DKI Environmental Agency (DLH) reported waste disposal trends before and after Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) 2023.
A week before Lebaran, specifically on April 16, 2023, Jakarta's waste production sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) reached 6,630 tons per day.
Afterward, the volume of waste tended to increase. The peak was on H-3 (April 19, 2023) with 9,325 tons of waste sent per day.
However, on Eid al-Fitr, April 22, 2023, the volume of waste decreased drastically to 1,987 tons per day. This low achievement was due to many Jakarta residents going home for Lebaran.
Head of the Jakarta DKI Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, stated that since H-4, the District Environmental Implementation Units of the Jakarta DKI DLH and garbage truck drivers had been instructed to empty temporary waste disposal points (TPS) throughout Jakarta.
Therefore, from H-4 to H-1, the waste sent to the Bantargebang TPST increased, then decreased during H and H+1 of Eid al-Fitr.
This emptying strategy was implemented so that TPS could accommodate waste at maximum capacity during the Lebaran holiday. Additionally, it aimed to create a comfortable environment and prevent the spread of diseases caused by waste accumulation.
"Waste that sits in TPS for more than 3 days starts to decompose and makes the environment unpleasant. We avoid that," said Asep in a written statement received by Databoks on Wednesday night (April 26, 2023).
Asep predicted that the peak of waste disposal would occur on H+7, H+8, and H+9 of Lebaran, after which it would return to the previous average. The Environmental Agency, said Asep, has anticipated this increase in waste accumulation.
When waste workers who also went home for Lebaran returned to work, the accumulated waste left at residents' homes began to be sent to the TPS.
"Based on experience from previous years, we have anticipated this increase. From H+7 to H+9 (Lebaran), waste transportation operations will be very optimal," said Asep.
The following is the volume of Jakarta's waste sent to the Bantargebang TPST based on data collected by the Jakarta DKI DLH:
