According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), consumption of chicken eggs in Indonesia has increased since the pandemic.

In 2018, national average consumption of chicken eggs reached 2.365 kilograms (kg) per capita per week. This then decreased to 2.314 kg per capita per week in 2019.

However, after the pandemic hit, in 2020 average consumption rose to 2.338 kg per capita per week. In 2021, average consumption further increased to 2.448 kg per capita per week.

This year, the price of chicken eggs rose to Rp30,000 per kg in August 2022. However, according to a report from the National Strategic Food Price Information Center, in September 2022 the price had begun to fall to an average of Rp29,000 per kg.

The Ministry of Trade stated that the current decrease in chicken egg prices is due to the normalization of production by egg-laying chicken farmers. Previously, the price of this commodity was high because the farmer's chicken population was reduced.

"At the beginning, we already discussed the projections; they (farmers) at that time carried out repopulation because previously they had culled (the population) due to falling prices," said the Acting Director General of Domestic Trade, Syailendra, as quoted from Detik.com, Tuesday (20/9/2022).

"That repopulation was projected to yield significant results in September and will increase further in the future," said Syailendra.
