Top 20 Soybean-Producing Countries in the World: Indonesia Ranks Low

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects global soybean production to reach 391.17 million metric tons (MT) in the 2022/2023 season, an increase of 35.56 million MT from the previous season.

Brazil is projected to be the largest soybean producer this season, with a production of 152 million MT, or 38.86% of total global production.

Soybean-producing regions in Brazil include Mato Grosso (28%), Rio Grande do Sul (14%), Golas (10%), and Mato Grosso do Sul (7%).

The next largest producer is the United States (US), with 115.38 million MT or 30% of total global production. US soybean production centers include Iowa (14%), Illinois (13%), Indiana (8%), Minnesota (8%), and Nebraska (8%).

Indonesia's soybean production in the 2022/2023 season is estimated at 400,000 MT, ranking 17th globally. Indonesia's soybean production accounts for only 0.1% of total global production.

Soybean-producing regions in Indonesia include East Java (39%), Central Java (16%), West Nusa Tenggara (9%), and West Java (6%).

Despite being among the top 20 global producers, Indonesia still imports significant quantities of soybeans each year because its production cannot meet the large domestic demand.
