Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Indonesia produced 367,816 tons of watermelon in 2022, a decrease of approximately 11.2% from the previous year's 414,242 tons.
In 2022, East Java was the largest watermelon producer with a production volume of 97,357 tons. This amount is equivalent to 26.46% of the total national watermelon production.
Central Java ranked second with a watermelon production of 59,837 tons in 2022, followed by North Sumatra with a production of 29,418 tons.
Watermelon production in Bali reached 24,562 tons, followed by Lampung and Riau with production of 19,442 tons and 17,539 tons respectively.

West Sulawesi was the lowest watermelon-producing province in Indonesia, producing only 156 tons throughout 2022. It was followed by Gorontalo and Banten with production of 174 tons and 513 tons respectively.
Meanwhile, images of watermelons have recently circulated widely on social media since the renewed Palestine-Israel conflict.
The fruit, with its combination of red, green, white, and black colors, is perceived as similar to the Palestinian flag and is used as a symbol of support for them.
"Raising the red, green, white, and black Palestinian flag has historically been banned in Israel and provoked the ire of authorities. So the watermelon—widely grown in Palestine and bearing similar colors—has been used for decades as Palestinian iconography symbolizing subversion," said Miriam Berger, a Middle East correspondent at *The Washington Post* (July 9, 2021).
