Riau, the Largest Palm Oil Producer

In 2015, Riau was Indonesia's largest palm oil producer, with a production of 7.33 million tons, followed by North Sumatra and Central Kalimantan in second and third place. Sumatra and Kalimantan are the main palm oil producing centers in Indonesia.

Indonesia is the world's largest palm oil producer. Indonesia and Malaysia account for 85 percent of the world's total palm oil production. Indonesia's palm oil production capacity in 2015 reached 31.28 million tons, while Malaysia's production was 21 million tons.

Abundant production leads to the export of most Indonesian palm oil to other countries. In 2015, the main destination for Indonesian palm oil exports was India, reaching 3.82 million tons (49 percent) of total exports, valued at US$2.11 billion. This was followed by the Netherlands, with a volume of 1.04 million tons (13.4 percent) worth US$0.6 billion, and then Malaysia with a volume of 0.62 million tons (7.98 percent) valued at US$347 million. In 2010, Indonesian palm oil exports reached 17.86 million tons, valued at US$15.2 billion. By 2015, the volume of palm oil exports had increased to 28.29 million tons, valued at US$16.95 billion.
