Three provinces on the island of Java, namely East Java, Central Java, and West Java, were Indonesia's largest rice barns in 2021.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), these three provinces each produced over 9 million tons of milled rice (GKG) last year, far exceeding the production capacity of other provinces.
The comparison can be seen on the map above. The darker the color, the higher the rice production capacity in that region.
The province with the next largest rice production in 2021 was South Sulawesi, reaching 5.09 million tons of GKG. This was followed by South Sumatra, Lampung, and North Sumatra, with rice production exceeding 2 million tons of GKG each.
Meanwhile, the Riau Islands and Jakarta were recorded as having the smallest rice production, namely 855 tons of GKG and 3,240 tons of GKG respectively during the same period.
On the other hand, BPS also noted that in 2021, the national rice harvest area had shrunk by 2.35% (year-on-year/yoy) to 10.41 million hectares (ha).
Then, national rice production in 2021 decreased by 0.42% (yoy) to 54.42 million tons of GKG, and when converted into rice, the volume decreased by 0.41% (yoy) to 31.36 million tons.
Details of national rice harvest area 2019-2021:
* 2019: 10.68 million ha
* 2020: 10.66 million ha
* 2021: 10.41 million ha
National rice production 2019-2021:
* 2019: 54.60 million tons GKG
* 2020: 54.65 million tons GKG
* 2021: 54.42 million tons GKG
National rice production 2019-2021:
* 2019: 31.31 million tons
* 2020: 31.49 million tons
* 2021: 31.36 million tons
Although the harvest area and production have tended to decrease, in August 2022 Indonesia received an award from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) for its good food security system and for achieving rice self-sufficiency during the period 2019-2021.
The award, titled "Acknowledgment for Achieving Agri-food System Resiliency and Rice Self-Sufficiency during 2019-2021 through the Application of Rice Innovation Technology," was presented by IRRI Director General Jean Balie to President Joko Widodo at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday (14/8/2022).
