Indonesia's Top Rice-Producing Province in 2023: East Java Takes the Lead

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), national rice production from January to September 2023 is estimated to reach 45.33 million tons of dry milled rice (GKG). This figure is down approximately 0.23% year-on-year (yoy).

Meanwhile, based on observations of the rice growth phase from the Area Sample Frame (KSA) survey conducted by BPS, the potential rice production for the October-December 2023 period is estimated to reach 8.30 million tons of GKG.

Therefore, total rice production in 2023 is estimated to reach 53.53 million tons of GKG, or a decrease of approximately 2.05% year-on-year.

East Java has the highest national rice production. This province is predicted to produce 9.59 million tons of GKG rice throughout 2023.

Although national rice production is predicted to decline, rice production in East Java is expected to increase by approximately 0.68% yoy.

The top three rice-producing provinces this year are dominated by Java Island. West Java and Central Java are ranked second and third, with estimated rice production of 9.09 million tons GKG and 9.06 million tons GKG, respectively.

3. Central Java: 9,061,715 tons GKG
4. South Sulawesi: 4,943,096 tons GKG
5. South Sumatra: 2,762,060 tons GKG
6. Lampung: 2,728,781 tons GKG
7. North Sumatra: 2,080,663 tons GKG
8. Banten: 1,678,766 tons GKG
9. East Nusa Tenggara (NTT): 1,546,820 tons GKG
10. West Sumatra: 1,457,502 tons GKG
