PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, had a total installed power generation capacity of 44,939.88 megawatts (MW) at the end of 2022.
This represents an increase of 475.13 MW or 1.07% compared to the end of 2021.
A detailed breakdown by power plant type shows the most significant growth in gas and steam power plants (PLTGU). However, there was a reduction in capacity for gas-fired power plants (PLTG).
The following table details the changes in PLN's installed power generation capacity at the end of 2022 compared to the end of 2021:
* Gas and steam power plants (PLTGU): increased by 356.85 MW
* Gas engine power plants (PLTMG): increased by 155.46 MW
* Coal-fired power plants (PLTU): increased by 53.5 MW
* Diesel power plants (PLTD): increased by 32.02 MW
* Hydroelectric power plants (PLTA): increased by 12.09 MW
* Solar power plants (PLTS): increased by 7.28 MW
* Micro-hydro power plants (PLTMH): increased by 0.5 MW
* Biomass power plants (PLTBM): increased by 0.02 MW
* Geothermal power plants (PLTP): unchanged
* Wind power plants (PLTB): unchanged
* Mini-hydro power plants (PLTM): decreased by 3.33 MW
* Gas-fired power plants (PLTG): decreased by 139.25 MW
The data shows that fossil fuel-based PLN power plants generally experienced larger increases in installed capacity than new and renewable energy (EBT) power plants.
Fossil fuel power plants include PLTGU, PLTMG, PLTU, and PLTD. EBT power plants include PLTA, PLTS, PLTMH, PLTBM, PLTP, PLTB, and PLTM.
PLN has stated it will continue to accelerate the development of EBT power plants, including through a cooperation agreement with China Communications Construction Dredging Co. Ltd. (CCCC), signed at the end of May 2023.
"The cooperation established between PLN and CCCC is expected to accelerate the development of EBT power plants. This will enable Indonesia to further accelerate its energy transition," said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in a press release (May 21, 2023).
"This cooperation agreement can increase investor confidence. Through a solid partnership between PLN and CCCC, it is also hoped that economic relations between China and Indonesia can be strengthened," he continued.
