The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) ensures the stability of national roads on several large islands in Indonesia. This is to support the smooth flow of land-based Idul Fitri homecoming travel in 2023.
Hedy Rahadian, Director General of Highways at PUPR, stated that his team continuously evaluates and improves road services and traffic flow.
"First, through support for operational conditions and the stability of roads and Rest and Service Areas (TIP/rest areas), then support for operational traffic management, and support for the comfort of road users," said Hedy in his official statement on Monday (27/3/2023).
According to the PUPR website, national roads crossing Java Island currently reach 4,821 kilometers (km). Of that length, the North Java coastal road is 1,192 km with a stable condition of 92%, and the South Java coastal road is 1,543 km with a stable condition of 93%. Meanwhile, the operational toll roads on Java Island are 1,716 km long.
For Sumatra Island, the Trans-Sumatra national road stretches 7,918 km. This road consists of the western route (2,562 km) in 97% stable condition, the eastern route (3,019 km) in 95% stable condition, and the central route (2,338 km) in 93% stable condition. The Trans-Sumatra toll road is 738 km long.
The national roads on Kalimantan Island reach 6,556 km. This road consists of the northern route with 95.32% stability, the central route with 80.17% stability, and the southern route with 90.96% stable condition. The toll road crossing Balikpapan-Samarinda is 99 km long.
Meanwhile, on Sulawesi Island, the national road sections used are 5,400 km long, with operational toll roads totaling 61.5 km. This includes the Ujung Pandang/Makassar toll road sections 1-3 (10.1 km), the Makassar section 4 (11.6 km), and the Manado-Bitung toll road (39.8 km).
"Meanwhile, the Bali-Mandara toll road is operational at 10.07 km, and the national road sections ready for use on Bali Island are 363.3 km long, consisting of the southern and northern coastal roads with 98.3% stable condition," added Hedy.
