Traffic accident cases in DKI Jakarta decreased by 9.3% in 2020.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 8,052 traffic accidents in Jakarta in 2020. This represents a 9.3% decrease compared to 2019, when there were 8,877 cases.

This decrease coincides with the implementation of community activity restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic since last year. However, the number of traffic accidents in Jakarta in 2020 was higher than in 2016.

In 2016, there were 6,180 recorded accidents in the capital. The following year, the number of traffic accidents in Jakarta decreased by 8.62% to 5,647 cases. However, after that, an increase in traffic accidents occurred for two consecutive years until 2019.

Traffic accidents in Jakarta resulted in fatalities, serious injuries, minor injuries, and material losses. The number of fatalities steadily decreased from 2016 to 2020. In 2016, there were 678 fatalities, decreasing to 534 in 2020.

Similarly, the number of serious injuries decreased from 2016 to 2018, reaching 867. However, in 2019, serious injuries increased to 1,565 and decreased again to 1,461 in 2020.

On the other hand, minor injuries increased from 2016 to 2019, reaching 8,433. Then, minor injuries decreased to 7,490 in 2020.

Material losses decreased from 2016 to 2018, reaching Rp 14.2 billion. The following year, material losses increased to Rp 18.33 billion in 2019 and decreased again to Rp 15.67 billion in 2020.

Public awareness of orderly and disciplined traffic behavior needs to be improved, such as wearing helmets for motorcyclists, using seat belts for car drivers, regularly checking vehicles, obeying traffic regulations, and so on. Therefore, safety, security, and comfort in driving can be created to prevent traffic accidents.
