The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 1.1 million domestic air passengers in August 2021. This figure represents a 7.26% increase compared to the previous month's 995,400 passengers.
This increase in domestic air passengers coincides with the easing of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) in various regions of Indonesia. This is due to the declining number of Covid-19 coronavirus cases since mid-July 2021.
However, the number of domestic air passengers in August 2021 was still 46.2% lower than the same period the previous year. In August 2020, the number of domestic air passengers reached 1.9 million.
In August 2021, the highest number of domestic air passengers originated from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, at 321,300. This represents a 28.57% increase from the previous month.
At Juanda Airport, Surabaya, the number of domestic air passengers increased by 31.58% to 97,500. Meanwhile, domestic air passengers from Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar, decreased by 10.16% to 66,300.
Furthermore, domestic air passengers at Kualanamu Airport, Medan, decreased by 3.31% to 49,700. The number of domestic air passengers at Ngurah Rai Airport, Denpasar, decreased by 5.2% to 47,400. Domestic air passengers at other airports decreased by 2.16% to 485,500.
From January to August 2021, the total number of domestic air passengers reached 17.7 million. This figure is down 18.26% compared to the same period in 2020, which saw 21.6 million passengers.
