Thirty of these fatal accidents occurred between 2002 and 2011, while the other 15 occurred between 2012 and 2021.
One of the most recent plane crashes in Indonesia involved Sriwijaya Air last year. Flight SJ182, a Boeing 737-524 on the Jakarta-Pontianak route, crashed near Laki Island, Thousand Islands, DKI Jakarta, on Saturday, January 9, 2021.
According to data from the Aviation Safety Network, the Sriwijaya Air tragedy was one of three fatal aviation accidents in Indonesia in 2021. The crash claimed 62 lives, comprising 56 passengers and 6 crew members.
In 2020, the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, there were no fatal aviation accidents in Indonesia. Strict community activity restrictions implemented throughout 2020 to curb the spread of Covid-19 drastically reduced air travel.
The highest number of fatal plane crashes in the last two decades occurred in 2009, with seven accidents. One involved an Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) plane that crashed near Iswahyudi Airport in Madiun, East Java, on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. This accident claimed 112 lives, consisting of 98 passengers and 14 crew members.
Recently, a China Eastern Airlines plane was reported to have crashed on a flight from Kunming to Guangzhou, China, on Monday, March 21.
The Boeing 737-800, flight number MU5735, was carrying 123 passengers and 9 crew members. All passengers are reported to have perished.
