According to the *TomTom Traffic Index*, congestion levels in Jakarta, DKI have steadily improved since 2017. At that time, congestion levels in the capital city reached 61% and it ranked 4th among the world's most congested cities.
In 2018, Jakarta's congestion dropped to 7th place, with a congestion percentage of 53%.
In 2019, Jakarta's congestion remained the same as the previous year, at 53%.
A significant change occurred in 2020, where Jakarta's congestion percentage dropped to 36%. Then, in 2021, it decreased further to 34%.
This means that, compared to travel under uncongested conditions, the average travel time in Jakarta is currently 34% longer due to traffic congestion. Currently, Jakarta ranks 46th globally according to the *TomTom Traffic Index*.
Many Residents Have Not Yet Returned to Normal Activities
The decrease in Jakarta's congestion is believed to be due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in many residents not yet returning to normal activities.
Furthermore, in the past two years, Jakarta has been the province with the highest rate of COVID-19 transmission in Indonesia, with a total of approximately 1.17 million confirmed COVID-19 cases between early March 2020 and March 2022.
As of March 1, 2022, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Jakarta reached 38,000, the third highest nationally after West Java and Central Java.
