A Ministry of Transportation survey predicts that 107.63 million people will travel during the 2023/2024 Christmas and New Year holiday (Nataru). This figure is equivalent to 39.83% of the total national population.
Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi explained that this number is projected to increase from last year's movement.
"During last year's Nataru holiday, it was predicted that 44.17 million people would travel, while this year it is predicted to be 107.63 million people. So the increase is very significant, over one hundred percent (143.65%)," Budi said in his official statement on Monday (20/11/2023).
Based on the mode of transportation to be used, private vehicles are the most popular choice among the public. Specifically, 35.57% or 39.97 million people plan to use cars, while 17.92% or 20.14 million will use motorcycles.
Meanwhile, the most popular public transportation mode is trains, at 13.16% or 14.79 million people.
Other options include airplanes at 11.91% (13.38 million people); buses at 10.94% (12.29 million people); ferries at 6.04% (6.78 million people); and sea vessels at 3.44% (3.86 million people).
In addition, Head of the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) Robby Kurniawan explained that the survey results can provide an overview of the trend of public mobilization during the year-end holidays.
"However, this survey result is not a substitute for real data that reflects the actual situation," he said.
This survey was conducted from October 26 to November 2, 2023, using an online questionnaire distribution method via WhatsApp, Instagram, and SMS blast.
The survey involved several parties such as media, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Komifo, academics, and transportation practitioners.
