The Turangga train collided with a Bandung Raya Commuterline train on Friday, January 5, 2024.
This first train accident of 2024 occurred on the Cicalengka-Haurpugur line in Bandung Regency, West Java.
"The incident, a head-on collision between the Turangga train and a local train, happened at 6:03 AM WIB," said Ayep, Public Relations Manager of KAI Daop 2, as reported by Antara on Friday, January 5, 2024.
According to the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation, the collision occurred approximately 800 meters before the Cicalengka Station signal.
"To follow up and evacuate the victims of this incident, the DJKA has sent a technical team to secure the scene," said DJKA Director General Risal Wasal in his press release on Friday, January 5, 2024.
"Further information regarding this incident will be released soon," Risal added.
This event adds to the long list of train accidents in Indonesia.
Based on data from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), train accidents have occurred every year, at least since 2007.
Throughout KNKT's records, the highest number of train accidents occurred in 2007, with 13 cases.
In subsequent years, accidents tended to decrease, reaching a record low of 1 case in 2011.
However, this downward trend in the number of accidents is not directly proportional to the number of victims.
For example, out of the 13 train accidents in 2007, a total of 9 people died.
However, out of the 10 train accidents in 2010, the total death toll reached 42 people.
Based on the investigation results of accidents from 2007-2023, the KNKT has given recommendations to various government agencies and companies involved in the national railway system.
The majority of its recommendations focus on strengthening supervision (60.2%), followed by infrastructure strengthening (18.3%), regulations (15.9%), and facilities (5.7%).
