Car sales in Indonesia showed positive growth throughout 2021. The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (GAIKINDO) recorded domestic car sales reaching 887,202 units from January to December 2021. This figure represents a 66.63% increase compared to 2020, which saw 532,407 units sold.
Toyota remained the best-selling car brand in 2021, with sales reaching 296,740 units. This accounts for 33.44% of total national car sales throughout last year.
Daihatsu took second place with total sales of 164,908 units in 2021. Mitsubishi followed with total sales of 144,123 units.
Furthermore, 91,793 Suzuki cars were sold throughout last year, followed by Honda, which sold 91,122 units.
Isuzu, Nissan, UD Trucks, and Peugeot sold 26,636 units, 3,177 units, 660 units, and 265 units respectively. The remaining 67,778 units represent sales of other car brands from January to December 2021.
Car sales in Indonesia had slumped in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, thanks to the PPnBM (Sales Tax on Luxury Goods), car sales rebounded and found stability in the second half of 2021, ranging from 70,000 to 80,000 units per month, peaking in December 2021 with sales reaching 96,000 units.
