Tesla Inc. recorded nearly one million electric vehicle sales in 2021.
Throughout last year, Elon Musk's company delivered 936,222 electric vehicles worldwide. This figure represents an approximately 87.37% increase from the previous year.
The most popular Tesla electric vehicle models were the 3 and Y, with a total of 911,242 units delivered in 2021.
Meanwhile, total deliveries of Tesla's premium electric vehicle models S and X reached 24,980 units throughout 2021.
"Total revenue grew 65% (yoy) in the fourth quarter of 2021 to US$17.7 billion. Annual revenue growth was driven by vehicle delivery growth and growth in other business segments," as quoted from Tesla's Q4 and FY2021 Update report released on Wednesday (26/1).
Tesla's sales growth was partly boosted by large-scale orders from Hertz, a car rental company in the United States (US).
According to The Verge, in October 2021, Hertz ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles to expand its electric vehicle rental fleet. Following this order, Tesla's stock price on the exchange surged, briefly exceeding US$1 trillion.
In addition to increased sales, Tesla's electric vehicle production also soared despite the semiconductor chip supply crisis that occurred since the beginning of 2021.
In 2021, Tesla produced 930,422 electric vehicles, nearly doubling its 2020 production. According to CNBC (7/2), Tesla overcame the chip supply crisis by reducing electronic control features and modifying software for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced in China.
