Jakarta Experienced Inflation Again in October 2021

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded Jakarta's inflation rate at 0.08% month-on-month (mom) in October 2021. This inflation rate increased from the previous month, which experienced a deflation of 0.06%.

By expenditure group, the highest inflation rate came from the transportation group at 0.44%. This inflation was driven by an increase in airfare.

Price corrections due to deflation in September 2021 caused airfare to increase in October 2021. In addition, the lowering of the Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) level in several areas led to an increase in public mobility.

The next highest inflation came from the clothing and footwear group at 0.31%. This inflation was contributed to by collared t-shirts, children's Muslim clothing, and children's shoes.

Furthermore, the household furnishings, equipment, and routine maintenance group experienced inflation of 0.24%. This group saw price increases in washing machines, pots, and electrical appliances.

On the other hand, the food, beverages, and tobacco group experienced deflation of 0.17%. However, two commodities contributed to the highest inflation: cooking oil and red chilies.

The increase in the price of crude palm oil, the raw material for cooking oil, pushed its price up. Meanwhile, the price of red chilies rose again because the peak harvest season had ended, resulting in reduced stock in the market.
