The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) states that Indonesia has experienced significant innovation progress over the past decade.
In its *Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023* report, WIPO groups Indonesia with China, Turkey, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Iran as countries showing the greatest innovation advancements.
Of these countries, China received the highest score, 55.3 out of 100. This places China 12th globally and third in the East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania region.
Turkey follows with a score of 38.6 points, ranking 39th globally and fourth in the North Africa and West Asia region.
India achieved an innovation score of 38.1 points, placing it 40th globally and first in Central and South Asia.
Indonesia ranks sixth among these seven countries, with a score of 30.3 points. This places Indonesia 61st globally and 12th in the East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania region, closely followed by Iran, as shown in the graph.
"This group comprises middle-income countries within the GII top 65. This is the group that has shown the fastest GII ranking improvement in the last decade," WIPO writes in its report.
The GII ranking is assessed based on two sub-indices: innovation input and innovation output. These two main sub-indices are further broken down into 5 input pillars and 2 output pillars, forming a total of 80 assessment indicators.
The criteria assessed include human resources and research infrastructure; market and business sophistication; technology and knowledge output; and creative output.
