Japanese automotive manufacturers still dominate the Indonesian motor vehicle market share. More than 90% of the national automotive market is controlled by manufacturers from the Land of the Rising Sun.
Toyota holds the top spot in the national automotive market share. Based on data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), the Japanese automotive manufacturer sold 256,259 units of cars from dealers to consumers (retail) throughout January-November 2021.
This figure is the highest compared to other brands. It accounts for one-third, or 33.6%, of total car sales in Indonesia, which amounted to 761,861 units.
Daihatsu is in second place, achieving a market share of 17.5%. This is followed by Mitsubishi Motors with a 12% market share, Honda with 10.7%, and Suzuki with 10.4%.
Mitsubishi Fuso also holds a 3.9% market share. Next is Isuzu with a 3.1% market share, Wuling with 2.8%, and Hino and Nissan each with 2.3% and 0.8% market share respectively. The remaining market share for other automotive brands is 2.9%.
Wuling, a Chinese automotive manufacturer that has only been present in the Indonesian automotive market for a few years, has managed to capture the attention of Indonesian car consumers. Wuling has successfully surpassed other South Korean and Japanese automotive brands.
