The Indonesian government continues its efforts to save Garuda Indonesia from bankruptcy. One of these efforts involves providing Rp7.5 trillion (approximately US$500 million) in state capital injection (PMN).
Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Erick Thohir hopes this PMN will improve Garuda Indonesia's performance.
"(The hope is) that its financial condition will be much healthier, that it can add aircraft with legitimate leases, not fraudulent ones," Erick said, as quoted by Detik.com on Friday (5/8/2022).
Garuda Indonesia reportedly plans to add three B737-800 NG aircraft to its fleet by the end of 2022. These aircraft are being relocated by their lessor.
These three additional aircraft will supplement Garuda Indonesia's projected fleet operation of 60 to 70 aircraft by the end of the year.
According to the company's report, at the end of 2021, Garuda Indonesia had 178 aircraft. This is a decrease from 210 aircraft the previous year.
Over the past decade, the number of Garuda Indonesia's aircraft has generally increased, as shown in the graph.
In 2010, Garuda Indonesia only had 89 aircraft. The number steadily increased, reaching its peak in 2019 and 2020 at 210 aircraft.
