According to Clean Technica, global electric vehicle sales reached 1.63 million units in May 2025, a 22% year-on-year (YoY) increase.
During this period, the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric vehicle globally, with sales of 74,994 units. However, this volume dropped by 19% (YoY).
BYD Song or Seal U ranked second with sales of 56,430 units, down 11% (YoY). This figure combines sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
Geely Geome Xingyuan completed the top three with sales of 38,715 units. Clean Technica suggests this Chinese-made electric vehicle has the potential to take the top spot, depending on how quickly Geely can ramp up its exports.
